So, what makes a great accountant? Here are the 6 attributes we look out for!
Here at Benjamin Edwards we have over 26 years of recruiting accountants into both industry and practice so have a good idea of what to look out for when recruiting.
- A financial wizard
Qualifications and work experience are of course important but being able to prove you can crunch numbers to determine a company’s financial health quickly and effectively is something a great accountant should excel at. We look for candidates who thrive on facts, figures and numbers. Show this in your CV with some metrics.
- Business minded
A great accountant should have the knowledge and understanding of a variety of business models and should be able to easily determine what financial and economic methods best suit the required goals. Great accountants shouldn’t just be able to crunch numbers but should also be able to offer advice in terms of revenue building and financial outcome management. Yes, we understand that you deal in risk and are cautious but use your skills to present the facts in a way that will be easy to understand.
- More organised that organised itself
Accountants regularly must manage complex projects and often multiple projects at any one time meaning having organisation in your blood is key. It is important to have strong time management skills as well as being able to work in a highly structured environment. If you can not manage yourself, how are you going to convince a business owner, or client that you can manage their affairs?
- Excellent communication skills
Anyone working in business will be able to tell you communication skills are a key factor in your career success, and for accountants, it is no different. More and more companies are now going down the business partnering route and its imperative that you can communicate effectively both internally and externally. Now is time for you to brush up on your communication skills and have a think about how you can present complicated information in a visual or graphic way that people can easily understand.
- Results and career driven
Passion for what you do can make or break your career but as an accountant it is also important to be able to funnel that passion and business vision into strong, accountable and achievable business plans. You’ll need to be both organised enough and results driven enough in your work to ensure financial records are always kept up to date and free from any errors!
- Qualifications are key!
If you are looking to progress your accountancy career you definitely need to be looking into the following:-
It’s not just always about accountancy qualifications (some smaller businesses are just as happy with an accountant who is qualified by experience). We have helped so many diverse companies and people find their next posting.
