Hiring for a start-up

When hiring for a start-up, it’s important we know exactly what they are looking for. Start-up employees often undertake multiple responsibilities, including ones that develop as the company grows. Usually, we look for someone with talent in multiple areas, someone who is creative and offers flexibility in their work-life balance.

As a county, Lincolnshire has always bucked the trend. Small and micro businesses make up 98% of the total business population. We are a county full of entrepreneurs. For some candidates, the start-up life offers unique attractions perfect for their lifestyle and work productivity. The developing procedures and smaller staff size tend to mean more casual and faster-paced work environments with plenty of opportunities for progression and involvement in decision making.

Many young people look to join start-up companies following their completion of education. A start-up may not be the right place for someone who requires stability and a sky-high salary but perfect for someone with an entrepreneurial attitude and who welcomes the collaboration factor.

Because of their limited cash flows and ever-changing policies, hiring for a start-up can be a bigger challenge than usual for recruiters.

Working for a start-up usually offers many benefits and it’s important to pack these into your job advert and description. Often start-ups offer a better work-life balance and generate opportunity for employees to work on projects usually not available in a more established workplace. As we mentioned before, start-ups will often hire people to work across more than one area of the company, giving greater variety and experience in the role.

It’s important when hiring for a start-up that you’re honest and manage expectations from candidates. Working for a start-up can bring in many benefits but it can also be risky. The company is not yet well established and you shouldn’t offer guarantees you can’t keep.

One positive benefit of the COVID-19 crisis is that remote working is now becoming the norm is most industries. By offering a remote work option you open up your role beyond a local level. This is great if you are in a more niche industry that may struggle to find talent within your local area.
