A job change during the current climate with reports of large-scale job losses and a predicted recession on the horizon may to some people seem a little foolhardy, but it is actually not a bad idea to switch jobs right now.
Are you fulfilled?
During lockdown you may have had the opportunity to do a little navel-gazing. Does your current job and circumstance fill you with joy?
- Does this role use my portfolio of strengths?
- Does it align with my areas of interest?
- Does the culture match my personality?
- Does this role enable the lifestyle I want?
If not then it may be time to consider a job change, because longer term, happiness is worth the risk. Change is difficult, but switching jobs is necessary for both personal and professional growth. You can always call us confidentially and ask about our free career coaching service.
It is well documented that the longer you stay, the more energy is required to spur you into action in pursuit of self-fulfilment. You may experience inertia and end up stuck in a rut. Moreover, once you are inside a company, the opportunity for big salary jumps are lessened. Annual salary increases are usually based on a percentage of base salary. If you move jobs you are in a better position to negotiate a higher starting salary or move up a grade.
New transferable skills
In late April 2020, the Government introduced a new online platform called the Skills Toolkit. Intended to help people build their skills during the coronavirus outbreak and beyond. The platform is still live, still free and has a host of short courses. If you are one of those who used their time during lockdown to build your skills it is a great time to think outside the box and transfer those skills to a new industry of application. Employers look favourably on people who continue to enhance their professional learning.
Note: – Do your due diligence
Before you consider a job change, make sure you heavily research the business you are moving to, check their accounts online if you can, read any media coverage negative or positive. Have a look at their accolades and awards and see what people are saying about them on sites like Glassdoor.
Here is a testimonial from Lauren who did change jobs during Covid and is now on her own route to happiness.
“Claire reached out got in touch with me via LinkedIn about a new role that I could be interested in. It was a step up role that I might not ever have had the confidence to apply for on my own, but from looking at my profile and CV Claire advised that I was in fact exactly the type of candidate the company were looking for!
“Claire was friendly and professional throughout the whole process, and also helped me to prepare for my first ever ‘Virtual Interview’. The interview process on the whole was smooth, and Claire was available for all and any questions that I had.
“I am now settled in my new role in a fantastic company with great career prospects, an extremely fortunate position during these trying times that I would never have been in if Claire hadn’t found me and reached out. Thank you! – Lauren – Commercial Accountant.”
