How we recruited a whole IT team for a business in Lincoln

Benjamin Edwards was approached to recruit a whole new IT team for a growing business who needed the infrastructure and IT systems and processes to succeed in a demanding marketing place.

The problem

Like many small businesses, our client had relied on an outsourced IT support to troubleshoot and respond to IT queries. The managing director now felt that the business was of a scale and needed an in-house team that could provide solutions to the reactive issues, but also work proactively and install new protocols and systems to future-proof the company and provide a competitive edge.

The demand for IT staff out-stripped supply with many people preferring a contractor or freelance life rather than being hired as a permanent employee.

Coupled with this issue was the location. The team would be based in Lincoln which was perceived to have a small talent pool.

The solution

We started with a conversation with the boss. What was the vision for the company? What was the ambition, who were the customers, how did they win business, who were the current employees, where had they worked before, what were the internal values? Then we looked at the environment. What were the offices like? Where was the site situated, pulling out details like parking, commuting, what shops, gyms, parks, bars and so on were nearby? That way we could paint a picture and market the company as a desirable place to work for the right applicant.

We then looked to each job role in detail. We listed essential qualities and technical skills that would be required. Who would they report to? What benefits were on offer, were there any opportunities for career progression or training? Rather than just copy-pasting the job description, we could bring the job advert alive.

As we are a recruitment firm based in Lincolnshire, we had built up a candidate database that we could filter by skill. We are well networked in Lincolnshire and we were able to start with these contacts as we began the initial search.

We created novel job adverts that we placed on job boards and social media. We concentrated on marketing the unique qualities of the company and highlighted the life-style opportunities for working in the beautiful city of Lincoln.

Cultural fit, attitude and drive were as equally important as technical skills and experience.

We spoke to each potential candidate and completed due diligence before they were put forward to a shortlist.

The two-stage interviews were carried out over a couple of days meaning that the management team were able to optimise their time.

The whole exercise took four weeks and the company were able to start their new project much quicker than they had expected.
